The Fabrication Department in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota is seeking to hire two Fabrication Technicians. The Fabrication Technician is responsible for overseeing the safe use of tools and equipment in the fabrication shops. The position helps foster a safe and welcoming working environment for shop users from all design disciplines and of all levels of skill. Students make furniture, exhibits, lamps, product prototypes, scale architectural models, and other physical objects. The Fabrication Technician consults with students about materials, recommends tools and processes, and demonstrates the safe operation of equipment. Because shop users have varying degrees of previous experience, the Fabrication Technician must be able to adjust their instruction style to accommodate any shop user. The Fabrication Technician also supervises and mentors student workers.
Work tasks vary day-to-day depending upon curricular needs. Work hours are established semester-to-semester and will require evening and/or weekend hours. The Fabrication Technician reports to the Fabrication Director. This is a 9-month, 100% time Labor-Represented position.
We are committed to attracting candidates from historically underrepresented groups, knowing that diversity enriches the academic experience and provides a knowledge base for innovation.
